About Xi Beta |
Xi Beta Chapter #155 Henderson State University
Founded: May 12, 1971
Incorporated: December 5, 1971
Xi Beta Chapter of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. was founded May 12th, 1971, on the campus of
Henderson State University (HSU) in Arkadelphia Arkansas and later incorporated on December 5th,
1971. This was very significant because it was the first chapter of the National Pan-Hellenic Council
founded in Arkansas on a non-Historically Black College campus.
On the evening of May 12th, 1971, Xi Beta Chapter was organized and duly initiated its inaugural
18 members, affectionately known as the Troublesome 18. This line was guided through the process by brothers from Arkansas Agricultural, Mechanical and Normal College’s Tau Sigma Chapter, later known as University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff and Philander Smith College’s Pi Sigma Chapter of Little Rock Arkansas, the only two undergraduate chapters of Omega in the state of Arkansas at that time. Members of the Troublesome 18 were Alonzo Clayborn, Charles Cobbs, Charles Pearson, Theandrew
Clayborn, Joe O’Neal, Gregory Hannah, Kirk Hannah, Johnny Mixon, Gregory Hill, Jerry
Jackson, Richard Sutton, Wendell Hughey, Don Baker, Jimmy Carter, Walter Kennedy, Billy
LaFear, Sam Reed, and John Butler.
The Seventies
There were eleven lines, including the Charter Line, made during the seventies at Xi Beta Chapter. The Chapter Line played a significant role in diversifying Greek life for young African American men and women at HSU. Xi Beta Chapter led the way with social actions and change while enhancing the quality of campus life for African American students as they pursued higher education. For almost 50 years, manhood, scholarship, perseverance, and uplift has been and continues to be the goals that all men of Xi Beta Chapter strive to live by. Nineteen brothers from this era have entered Omega Chapter. Brothers, Gregory Hill, Richard Sutton, Wendell Hughey, Don Baker, Walter Kennedy Jr, Samuel Reed, Timothy Michael Gregory, David Faison Sr, John B.
