About Psi Alpha

November 1, 2020 marked 80 years of service to the Alamo City by Psi Alpha Chapter. From our humble beginnings we are now a Chapter of close to 200 financial members. San Antonio is a Chapter influenced by the large active duty and retired military who reside in our City. These 8 Great Men who chartered our Chapter, they did not find or found anything. So many articles call them our "Founders" but Omega Psi Phi only has 4 Founders and countless others who have Chartered Chapters but they did not find anything. In 1940, eight professional men from varied careers ranging from 4 educators, a dentist, a civil servant, a physician, and a businessman who had become members of the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Incorporated during their college years, decided that the time was right to form a Graduate Chapter here in the City of San Antonio. They were as young as 24 years of age to as old as 49 years of age. They all had attended historically Black Colleges and University’s (HBCU’s) due to segregation in the United States at this time in history. Some were raised in San Antonio, some from other cities in the state of Texas, one from Georgia, and one from Virginia. Two were Veterans of WWI and one went on to serve in WW II after the Chapter was chartered. After compiling all of the necessary information, paperwork and complying with the National Body's Guidelines, the Local Chapter was chartered by the Supreme Council of the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Incorporated on November 1, 1940, and given the name of Psi Alpha. “Long Live the Alamo City Ques!” Charter Members of Psi Alpha Chapter Dr. William Virgil Hurd DDS 1894-1961 WWI - Ω Fort Des Moines War Chapter/Delta Chapter 1917 Valmo Bellinger Businessman and Editor 1899-1994 - Ω Beta Chapter, Lincoln University 1922 Ernest M. Mayers 2021 - Present The works of Psi Alpha assisted in the City being fully integrated by 1960 and San Antonio, Texas was the first Southern City to fully integrate. Psi Alpha men continue to be instrumental in local politics, education, medical professionals, military service, federal service, and the private sector. Psi Alpha men since 1940 have held various District and National positions within the Fraternity while serving our local Chapter and community concurrently.
