About Mu Gamma

HISTORY OF BLOODY MU GAMMA CHAPTER

              Bloody Mu Gamma Chapter of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity Inc. began on the campus of Bishop College in Marshall, Texas, with four young Theology students named Harry Blake, Stanley Chambers, Ray Gill and Charles Hubbard.  Even though they attended Bishop College, they were initiated into the folds of Omega through the historic Theta Chapter (“Mother Theta”) at Wiley College in Marshall, Texas.

              Mother Theta Chapter was chartered in 1922 as the first Chapter west of the Mississippi River.  Therefore, Bloody Mu Gamma Chapter’s history began with the birth of Brother Blake Brother Chambers, Brother Gill and Brother Hubbard through the historic Mother Theta Chapter of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity Inc. on December 13, 1957.

              Brother Willie “Bill” Lewis, who became the Chapter’s first sponsor, applied for a charter just prior to the neophytes’ crossing and the Bloody Mu Gamma Chapter Charter (Charter #105) was granted on December 4, 1957.  Brother Blake became the Chapter’s first Basileus and Brother Hubbard became the first Keeper of Records and Seals.  The neophytes shared the responsibilities of Dean of Pledges.

               From December 13, 1957 to November 22, 1986, there were a total of One Hundred Thirty-Seven (137) men initiated into the folds of Omega through Bloody Mu Gamma Chapter of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity Inc.

              Throughout the years of its existence, Bloody Mu Gamma Chapter played a big part in a lot of America’s history along with the history of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity Inc. The Sixties introduced many profound changes to American society; the Vietnam War, the killing of President John F. Kennedy in Dallas, Texas, boycotts at food counters, Afros, Civil Rights and the Black Panthers to name a few.  In the early years of the 1960's, Bishop College, home of Bloody Mu Gamma Chapter, moved from Marshall, Texas to Dallas, Texas.

              On April 8, 1962 Brother Alexander Okogo became the first brother of "Nigerian" descent to be initiated into Omega Psi Phi Fraternity Inc., through Bloody Mu Gamma Chapter.

               The 1970’s ushered in the Disco era, the Black Light became a party favorite and the common saying was “Do Your Own Thing”.  The popular movies included Shaft; Cornbread, Earl and Me; Super Fly; and Lady Sing the Blues.  The music of the day was For the Love of Money; Brick House; and Why Must I Chase the Cat.

               On December 4, 1970, Omega Psi Phi Fraternity Inc. received another first through Bloody Mu Gamma Chapter.  Brother Carlton Russell became the first “Little Person” to enter Omega Psi Phi Fraternity’s fold through Bloody Mu Gamma Chapter.

              The 1980’s circulated rumors of despair about the closing of Bishop College, and ironically the first line of this decade was named “Four Shadows of Death”.  On November 22, 1986, three young men on the “Triangle of Doom” line made the last “Death March” at Bishop College before the doors of the College were closed permanently.  The real estate and buildings that were once occupied by Bishop College was subsequently purchased by another HBCU, Paul Quinn College, located in Waco, Texas.  Naturally, with the relocation of Paul Quinn College from Waco, Texas to Dallas, Texas, Zeta Eta Chapter of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity Inc. relocated to the former campus occupied by Bloody Mu Gamma Chapter.

              On Saturday, September 17, 2016, approximately thirty years after the closing of Bishop College, a group of Omega men initiated at Bloody Mu Gamma Chapter met at the home of Brother Mitchell King in Lancaster, Texas to discuss a strategy for the reactivation of Mu Gamma Chapter.  The Mu Gamma Chapter Brothers present (left to right) were:

Bro. Irving Butler;

Bro. Levi Williams;

Bro. Mitchell King;

Bro. John Clay;

Bro. Don Juan Nelson;

Bro. Nathaniel Eubanks;

Bro. Harold Jones;

Bro. Gregory Williams, Esq.;

Bro. Andrew Jackson, Esq.; and

Bro. Gregory Williams, Jr.

                On Monday, September 26, 2016, Bro. Gregory Williams, Esq. prepared the Bloody Mu Gamma Chapter Application for Reactivation and Reassignment as a Graduate Chapter.  The Application was signed by forty Omega men initiated at Mu Gamma Chapter.

                 On Thursday, January 18, 2018 in Atlanta, Georgia during a formal meeting of the Supreme Council of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity Inc.,  a motion was made by the 9th District Representative for the Reactivation of Bloody Mu Gamma Chapter as a Graduate Chapter to be located in Irving, Texas.  The motion was passed by a majority vote of the Supreme Council at that time.

                 On Thursday, February 8, 2018 Bloody Mu Gamma Chapter held its first official meeting as an activated Graduate Chapter servicing the City of Irving, Texas.
